Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama
Mobile's primary drinking-water reservoir and a popular crappie fishery.
Target species
Big Creek Lake is Mobile's primary drinking-water reservoir, managed by the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System — and despite its day job, it's also one of the more popular crappie fisheries in the greater Mobile area.
Because it doubles as a public water supply, Big Creek Lake carries boating and access rules that don't apply to a typical reservoir. Check MAWSS's current regulations before you launch, since they can differ from what you'd expect on a standard Alabama lake.
Crappie here follow the standard reservoir pattern — shallow wood and brush in spring as fish spawn, deeper standing timber and creek channels through summer and winter, with a shallow feeding push again in fall.
